Shinsengumi
The first kanji seems different from the historical
Kyoto Shinsemgumi, Im not sure why.

How to make a Japanese style flag.

Youll need : a dowel, material (any size you want), a plumbing pipe connector(make sure your dowel fits in it snug).

Print the desired kanji on iron-on paper, or regular paper to use as a stencil.
Apply image to the fabric.
Cut your dowel so that you have two pieces, one the width of the flag(minus the right side hemm) and one the length of the flag plus however much you want hanging out to hold on to.
Hemm the bottom and left side normally.
Cut a small square out at the top right. Should be about twice the width of your dowel.
Hemm the top and right side so that you can slide the dowel though.
Slide the dowels in and connect at the top right with the dowel connector.
Now you have a flag that you can take apart and bring with you! If you find it wobbly you can put glue in the connector but then you wont be able to dis-assemble it anymore.

Had this idea while doing the Shinsengumi kanji up there. It started out as a sticker (about 2inches high!) of their flag, and I just thought it would be a rocking prop for any Shinsengumi cosplayer.
